There is a difference. A spot is easily removed soiling that sits on top or between the carpet fibers. A stain is actually penetrated the dye sites on the carpet fibers. Very simply put, carpet fibers typically respond to dyes based on either their acidity or alkalinity. Food-based stains can penetrate these sites and create a stain that is permanent. Some products are capable of permanently damaging the carpet when used by consumers attempting to in properly remove a stain.

I'll try to cover basic and common spots and stains that you may encounter. Remember, professional spotting chemicals and solutions are typically far superior to household products in a so-called natural cleaners available at your health food store or supermarket. Professional carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning chemicals have been formulated for specific uses, spots, and stains.

No job is easily accomplished without the right set of tools, so you'll want to have more than just a towel and a bottle of soap to remove spots and stains. I've taken all the guesswork out of what you should have on hand, and I've put together a list of the most common and useful spotting tools to use with carpet spot cleaners. When I was cleaning carpets on a daily basis, I ran across several common stains in nearly every household. Among the stains I encountered were chocolate stains, bloodstains, plant stains, red wine stains, rust and furniture stains, and probably the most common by far, those coffee and tea stains.
