A spot is easily removed soiling that sits on top or between the carpet fibers. A stain is actually penetrated the dye sites on the carpet fibers.

Very simply put, carpet fibers typically respond to dyes based on either their acidity or alkalinity.

Food-based stains can penetrate these sites and create a stain that is permanent. Some products are capable of permanently damaging the carpet when used by consumers attempting to in properly remove a stain.
